Remote Desktop - Mac version 10

This set of instructions is for certain approved BU users to remotely connect to their BU Windows-based campus workstation, through the operations of a Mac computer in their home.

Prerequisites

  • You need to be running and connected to the BU VPN (aka FortiClient VPN) system first. Full instructions on setting up and using the BU VPN program can be found here:
  • You will need to know the name of your BU computer that you are trying to connect to, please see steps later in the instructions on how to locate that information.
  • You also need to have both your machine and your account modified for Remote Desktop to work. Please contact the BU Help Desk to set up the necessary settings (be sure to inform us the name of the BU computer you are attempting to connect to).
  • When attempting to use the Remote Desktop method, your BU computer (the one that you are trying to connect to) needs to be turned on, but not actively logged in with your account. But if you share the computer with anyone else, you need to make sure that no other users are also logging in, either remotely or directly on the computer itself.
  • On your home/personal Mac machine, you will have to install a free app called “Microsoft Remote Desktop”.  You can find this by going to the app store on your Mac and searching for it by typing “Microsoft remote desktop” in the search field.  Once you find it, select Get, then select Install.  You will be asked for your Apple id and password

Instructions

  1. Run and connect the BU VPN application.  You will have to connect to the VPN every time you use Remote Desktop to establish a secure connection to the university network.

  6. Leave the rest of the settings as the default settings and click Add
  7. On the 'Microsoft Remote Desktop' application screen, you will see an icon with the name of the remote computer you want to access

When you are done with a session, you can logout by clicking the windows icon in the bottom left hand side of the screen, click on your name, then click Sign Out.
