Once your BU Student user account has been setup to use Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), you will be prompted with these prompts the next time you sign into the BU Office365 portal.

On a Computer/Laptop (recommended)

  • Log into the BU Office365 portal
  • Enter your BU email address and BU password
  • At this point you will be prompted for more information. Click 'Next' to continue.
  • The next step is where you will setup your second factor of authentication.

Options as your second factor are:

  • Recommended:
    • Microsoft Authenticator App for smartphones and tablets (Most Secure)
    • SMS/Text Message (Quicker to setup and easier to manage)
  • Also available:
    • Phone Call

BU recommends to select the "Microsoft Authenticator" Mobile App, which can be used for push notifications on a personal smartphone/device during any of your logins.  Please note that your smartphone/device will need a working and active internet connection (Wi-Fi or Cellular) in order for the app to receive the push notifications.

Below are the steps to configure the mobile app, but the process is similar for the other options.

  • In Step 1, select "Mobile App" from the drop-down list.
    • There are other options for setting up your second factor like a SMS Code text you you, or a phone call approving the login. If you select SMS text once you enter your info you will be sent a code to enter to verify it works for you.  If you do not have a personal smartphone/device, please choose one of the other options available

  • You will be prompted to scan a QR code from the "Microsoft Authenticator" App, and continue with the guided instructions as seen below.

ON your smartphone/device:

1) Download the app on your device's relevant App Store

2) Open the Microsoft Authenticator App, press the plus sign in top corner to add your account, select a Work or School Account,

3) Select "Scan QR Code" (you may have to allow access to your camera), scan the code on your computer/laptop with your phone, then your BU account info will show up in the list of accounts.

  • Once you have scanned your QR Code you will be sent a push to your phone to approve the configuration of your device.

  • After you have confirmed your "Microsoft Authenticator" App works, you can add your mobile phone number to receive SMS Text Codes incase your mobile app is not able to work.

Once completed, you will now continue the sign-in steps, and will be prompted for your second factor that you setup.  It is at this point you should look for a notification appearing on your phone/device, which you will need to click 'Approve' in order to complete the secured login process.

During the login process you can skip the MFA check for 14 days, all you have to do is check this box during the login process.
